A week of work experience at Scriba PR

Having recent graduated from University of Leeds with a 2:1 in Ancient History and History, Scriba visitor, Alice Smith, talks us through her experiences as our intern, in our blog.

Most university graduates can relate to the anxiety of being thrust into the working world with no job lined up, and no clue what they might do next.

Where do you start? Are you good enough? How do you make sure your application stands out among hundreds of others? And, if you’ve never worked in a particular sector before — and don’t know anyone who has — how do you know you’re going to be suited or enjoy it? These are only a few of the many questions I have asked myself in the year since graduating.

However, after completing a week's work experience at Scriba, my mind has been eased on numerous occasions. Mainly, throughout my time, I was able to gain advice from people who had been in the same boat as me, and survived! Thrived, in fact. These different positive perspectives gave me confidence that I can adapt to a new workplace environment, and have both the ability and experiences to succeed.

As the days went on, I garnered more knowledge from the world of PR — the process of preparing and issuing press releases to the media, trawling for subsequent coverage, creating clippings, utilising media relation tools to collate media lists, and researching and drafting a blog for publication on a Scriba client’s website.

This insight has truly been invaluable in building my commercial awareness, and putting the skills I’ve learnt in my undergraduate degree into a working context has empowered me to envision myself in this career in the future.

I really enjoyed my week at the Lindley-based agency, and I want to give the team a huge ‘thank you’ for making me feel so welcome. I’m grateful for not only the countless teas and coffees that were offered to me, but the guidance and support from start to finish.

Alice Smith
